New Plastic Rules Coming 2017

Plastics contribute a significant amount of pollution around the world. In the state of California, new rules about plastic bags can change the way businesses operate and reduce plastics in the environment.

No More Carryout Bags

Since 2007, cities within the state of California banned the distribution of plastic carryout bags in grocery stores and retail businesses. If Proposition 67, also known as the California Plastic Bag Ban Veto Referendum, passes on the November 2016 ballot, grocery stores and pharmacies across the entire state will no longer be able to provide plastic carryout bags to their customers.

Some plastic bags are exempt from the ban such as those used for:

  • Meat
  • Produce
  • Bread
  • Perishables
  • Bulk food

Plastic bags can continue to be used for these purposes to prevent food contamination and protect consumers.

Grocery Bag Charge

Grocery stores can still offer carryout bags to their customers, but the bags must be:

  • Made from recycled materials
  • Compostable
  • Reusable

Stores must charge customers 10 cents per bag. However, customers who use the California Special Supplemental Food Program are exempt from the charge.

Still Have Plastic Bags?

Be sure to recycle all those plastic bags you can no longer use. Visit this website to learn more about CRV plastic recycling in National City and help prevent plastics from entering the environment.
